Surfing came to Britain in the 1960's. This was the hay day of surfing worldwide, in part this was due to the popularity of the music from groups such as the Beach Boys and The Surfaris.
In 1966 the British Surfing Association was formed and Newquay never looked back.
We have some of the best surfing in the UK for surfers and body boards and from beginners to experts.
Here is a breakdown of our beaches.
Lusty Glaze can have some serious swells and on mid to high tide it will have some rocky out cropping. This too is good for novices as long as the swell is not too large.
Tolcarne is Newquay's most consistent surf for year round surfing. The best surfing here occurs with an off shore wind.
Great Western has consistent waves on all tidal ranges and is great for beginners.
Towan is the least exposed beach and so is very popular with beginners. Because of this popularity however it can also be very crowded in the winter.
North Fistral is a good beach to surf at any tide when the swells are large and is also a good beach for beginners. In the summer months the beach can get crowded.
South Fistral is suitable for beginners although the beach can have dangerous rip currents. The best swells for surfing are from west to south west.
